Canton Karat 920
$595.00
The Canton Karat 920 is a premium, vintage two-way bookshelf loudspeaker built in Germany by Canton Electronics starting in the mid-1980s. Known for exceptional build quality and premium wood cabinet finishes, these passive speakers offer a balanced soundstage and high-end audio performance.
Key Design Elements
- The “DC” Technology: Later revisions of these speakers are labeled as Karat 920 DC. Canton’s Displacement Control (DC) technology uses a specific crossover network design to filter out subsonic frequencies. This prevents the woofer from over-exerting below its resonant frequency, resulting in tighter, cleaner bass and less distortion. [1, 2]
- Front-Firing Port: Because the bass port is on the front of the cabinet, these speakers are very flexible with placement. You can push them close to a back wall or place them inside a tight bookshelf without muddying up the low end. [1]
Driving the Speakers
Because of their 4-ohm load characteristics and lower 88 dB sensitivity, they require a stable, high-quality amplifier to sound their best. A weak amplifier might struggle to deliver the current they need, while a solid-state vintage receiver or a clean modern amp will help the drivers open up and sing.
