$1,200.00
The Aragon 4004 MKII is a legendary vintage dual-mono solid-state power amplifier created by Mondial Designs (co-founded by Dan D’Agostino of Krell fame) in the early 1990s. Often nicknamed the “poor man’s Krell”, it delivers 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms and can double its output into 4 ohms or lower.
Design and Architecture
- True Dual-Mono: Features two completely separate power transformers, rectifier circuits, and amplifier cards in a single heavy metal chassis.
- Power Output: Rated at 200W per channel into 8 ohms, scaling up to 400W into 4 ohms, with the ability to handle demanding low-impedance loads down to 1 ohm.
- Aesthetic: Heavy industrial build with a black brushed-face plate and the trademark V-notch or “A” groove ventilation pattern on the front and heatsinks.
Sound and Performance
- Driving Capability: Renowned for incredible bass grip, dynamic authority, and the muscle required to effortlessly drive tough electrostatic or planar speakers like MartinLogan and Magnepan.
- Sonic Signature: Highly transparent, neutral, and detailed, though vintage units may require servicing or recapping due to age.
